ORLANDO, FL, December 1, 2003 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) today announced that its Link Simulation and Training division has been awarded an $11.8 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract from the U.S. Navy's Naval Air Systems Command Training System Division to upgrade four currently-fielded F/A-18C flight simulators.

The contract calls for Link to modify three F/A-18C Tactical Operational Flight Trainers (TOFT), requiring existing software and cockpit hardware on each simulator to be upgraded to the latest C model aircraft configuration. The existing F/A-18C TOFTs are located at Naval Air Station Oceana, Naval Air Station Lemoore and at Naval Air Field Atsugi, Japan.

In addition, Link will undertake a total software and hardware upgrade of an F/A-18C Operational Flight Trainer at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, SC. The upgraded trainer will become an F/A-18C TOFT.

"A key benefit of this upgrade effort is that each simulator will now have an established common software baseline and common hardware design," said Gary Nesta, vice president of training devices programs for Link Simulation and Training. "In addition, the trainers will have the ability to network and be concurrent with the Navy's fielded F/A-18C aircraft."

In addition to the software and cockpit hardware upgrades, the trainers also will be integrated with modern, cost-effective personal computer technology that will replace existing host computers, image generation systems and instructor operator station computers.

All of the trainers also will be integrated with Link's SimuSphereä visual system display. The seven facet SimuSphere systems will provide pilots with a 300° horizontal x 130° vertical out-the-window field-of-view of terrain, sky and moving models in the visual system database.

These upgraded F/A-18C TOFTs will enable pilots to hone their air-to-air combat skills by interacting with a wide range of simulated adversaries and enhance their air-to-ground combat training by countering simulated surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery and early warning radar sites. The F/A-18 TOFTs also will enable pilots to practice carrier takeoffs and landings, weapon system employment and emergency procedures skills.
