NEW YORK, NY, November 14, 2006 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Link Simulation and Training (Link) division has won a contract to provide the U.S. Navy with its first P-3C Forward Deployed Trainer (FDT). Under this contract the Navy may procure up to nine additional FDTs.
P-3C Orion crews play a major role in searching, locating, tracking, identifying and attacking surface, subsurface and overland targets. As the crew acquires information from the aircraft’s sensor systems, the P-3C quickly communicates this key data to other aircraft or command centers.
The P-3C FDT has been designed to support immersive training at three of the aircraft’s acoustic and non-acoustic sensor operator consoles. The trainer is modular, allowing consoles to be flexibly arranged to operate within the small footprint requirements found at austere overseas operations. A personal computer-based instructor operator station enables the designated instructor to control the training exercise.
"As P-3C crews continue to play increasingly active roles overseas and training opportunities are reduced, the Navy recognized the value in a forward deployed, high fidelity training device," said John McNellis, president of Link Simulation and Training. "The FDT will prove particularly valuable to P-3C crews overseas, enabling these crews to undergo simulation-based training that will help maintain their proficiency in tracking targets over complex operating environments."
The initial P-3C FDT will be delivered to Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL and is planned to reach ready-for-training status in March 2008. The last contract option is scheduled to be exercised by the Navy during the latter part of 2008.
