NEW YORK, NY, October 10, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL)
today announced that its Link Simulation and Training division
has received a $6.6 million contract from the U.S. Navy to
build a P-3C Partial Aircrew Coordination Trainer (PACT) which
will be used to hone the skills of the aircraft's intelligence
gathering crews. Commander Patrol Reconnaissance Forces Pacific
P-3C crews, which patrol the western Pacific Ocean, will train
on the system when it is delivered to Naval Air Station (NAS)
Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in 19 months.
P-3C
PACT is a training requirement driven by the P-3 Aircraft
Improvement Program (AIP). This system represents the fourth
P-3C PACT that Link will have delivered to the Navy since
1999. Upgrades to the P-3C aircraft have added long-range
optical, infrared and electronic intelligence gathering sensors,
synthetic aperture radar and data links to give the aircraft
the ability to gather intelligence, maintain long-term surveillance
and conduct reconnaissance on potential targets.
"For over four decades the P-3 has been the U.S. Navy's leading
land based maritime patrol and surveillance aviation platform,
said Mike Lulu, vice president of business development for
Link Simulation and Training. "Today its enhanced role in
obtaining and communicating intelligence and surveillance
information has been instrumental to the support of coalition
forces working in places like Bosnia and Afghanistan. The
Link-built P-3C PACT systems are playing an important role
in teaching system operation and crew coordination skills
in acquiring information from the aircraft's sensor systems
and communicating the technical data to other aircraft or
command centers."
The flight crew operates the P-3C's tactical coordinator,
navigation/communications, non-acoustic sensor, electro-optical
system sensor and flight stations. The P-3C PACT simulates
the aircraft's physical arrangements, computer/display systems,
sensor systems and navigation and communications systems.
The P-3C PACT at NAS Kaneohe will join other P-3C PACT systems
installed by Link at NAS Jacksonville, FL; NAS Whidbey Island,
WA; and NAS Brunswick, Maine.
