LEXINGTON, Mass., July 8, 1998 -- A UH-1N weapon system trainer built by Raytheon
Systems Company, a unit of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTNA, RTNB), has been accepted by
the Naval Air Warfare Center's Training System Division and is being used to train U.S.
Marine Corps pilots to fly the UH-1N multi-role helicopter.
This 24-foot dome-on-motion simulator, installed at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps
Air Station, Calif., provides UH-1N two-man aircrews with full flight operations and
weapon systems training. The UH-1N weapon system trainer enables pilot skills to be
honed in the areas of normal and emergency procedures, instrument and navigation flight,
formation and nap-of-the earth flight, ship and airfield take-offs and landings, external
cargo operations, night vision goggle proficiency, threat avoidance and missile and gun
employment.
UH-1N aircrews will view computer generated data base scenes over a 220° x 70°
field-of-view dome display. This mission rehearsal-capable visual system data base
encompasses 200,000 square miles of high detail of real terrain over the United States'
West Coast.
Added realism has been brought to the UH-1N weapon system trainer through the
integration of a heavy payload, high performance, six degree-of-freedom motion system
that simulates the flight attitudes of the aircraft.
