NEW YORK, NY, June 27, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its
Link Simulation and Training division has won a $5.8 million one-year contract to provide
support for currently-fielded U.S. Navy and Marine Corps F/A-18 training assets at military
bases in the United States and Japan. The contract, awarded by the Naval Air Systems Command's
Naval Air Warfare Center Training System Division, has four one-year options that would increase
the value of the program to over $30 million.
"Link has a long history in supporting the Navy and Marine Corps F/A-18 training
community and is very proud to have been chosen for this competitive award," said David
Williams, vice president of services programs for Link Simulation and Training. "The support
services Link will continue to deliver in support of F/A-18 training assets will complement
upgrades we're making today under separate contracts to the aircraft's pilot simulators.
Our long-term goal is to remain a strong partner to the F/A-18 training community while
providing the best in support services and trainer development."
Link, the incumbent on this contractor operations and maintenance program for the past
five years, will continue to provide support services for F/A-18 pilot training assets that
include five weapons tactics trainers, eight tactical operational flight trainers, six
operational flight trainers and three part task trainers. This support also will extend to
one EA-6B weapon systems trainer. Collectively, these devices are used to train pilots in
cockpit and emergency procedures, takeoffs and landings, air-to-air and air-to-ground combat,
and electronic countermeasures.
In the area of aircraft maintenance technician training, Link will support an F/A-18
maintenance trainer suite, classroom hardware and the local area network (LAN) that links
students' classroom computers. The F/A-18E/F maintenance trainer suite is comprised of six
high fidelity aircraft mockups that provide technicians with hands-on maintenance training on
the strike fighter's subsystems. The computers, LAN, servers and other related equipment that
Link will support within F/A-18 classrooms will enable Navy instructors to deliver a full range
of aviation maintenance training curricula.
In addition, so that F/A-18 program assets exceed 95 percent trainer availability, Link's
logistics team will maintain an inventory management process that will ensure proper stock
levels and pre-qualify vendors and suppliers.
Link's approximate 120-person program team will provide maintenance, operations, logistics
and administration support for F/A-18 squadron training assets at Naval Air Station Lemoore,
CA; Naval Air Station Oceana, VA; Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, CA; Marine Corps Air Station
Beaufort, SC; Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan; and Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan.
