NEW YORK, NY, June 19, 2001 -- L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) today announced that its Link
Simulation and Training division has completed installation of the first of four F-16 unit training
devices for the Egyptian Air Force (EAF).
The initial F-16 unit training device has been installed at the EAF's Gianaclis training
facility. Three other Link-built F-16 unit training devices will be installed by September
at various EAF operational fighter bases.
This program, valued at approximately $30 million, was awarded to Link by the U.S. Air
Force's Aeronautical Systems Center in 1998. Under this contract, Link has built unit
training devices that are configured to simulate F-16 Block 15, F-16 Block 32 and F-16 Block
40L aircraft flown by the EAF.
"The strong working relationship between Link, the U.S. Air Force and the Egyptian Air
Force resulted in the formation of an integrated product team that helped to ensure flexibility
in meeting changing program requirements," said Gary Nesta, Link Simulation and Training's vice
president of training systems. "Not only did we have the opportunity to insert new technologies
to enhance the trainers as they were being developed, but we were also able to respond late into
the program to make adjustments to the deployment of the trainers."
The F-16 unit training devices will enable EAF pilots to practice takeoffs and landings,
formation flight, low-level navigation, tactical skills and interact with simulated aircraft
avionics. In addition, the trainers will enable EAF pilots to hone their air-to-air and
air-to-ground skills within a tactical environment.
During these training exercises, which can occur under a variety of simulated weather
conditions, EAF pilots will be able to acquire and identify targets and accurately deliver a
wide range of weapon systems.
The trainers also are integrated with a Link-built geo-specific visual system database
that encompasses most of Egypt. The visual system database will provide terrain correlation
between the out-the-window visual scene and radar and other sensor displays by using a master
database.
The F-16 unit training devices feature a three channel, spherical rear projection display
system that provides a 60° vertical by 180° horizontal field-of-view.
