L-3 Communications's Link Simulation & Training
Awarded New F-22 Trainer Production Contract

NEW YORK, NY, May 28, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) today announced that its Link Simulation and Training division has been awarded a $29.9 million contract from Boeing to build full mission trainers, weapons tactics trainers and seat and canopy trainers to support F-22 Raptor pilot and maintenance training.

This award marks the second F-22 training device production award Link has received. Future F-22 training device production contract awards could increase the value of the program to over $200 million.

Under this production award, plans call for Link to deliver full mission trainers and weapons tactics trainers that will support networked training. The full mission trainers and weapons tactics trainers being developed under this second production contract will be interoperable with comparable systems that Link will deliver as part of the initial production contract it received in 2001.

"This award underscores the importance of having training devices in place prior to the F-22 Raptor achieving its initial operational capability," said Gary Nesta, Link Simulation and Training's vice president of devices programs. "These training devices, as part of the total training system being developed by Boeing, will play a key role in developing the full range of knowledge and skills Air Force pilots and maintainers need to operate and support this advanced aircraft platform."

The Raptor's entire flight envelope will be simulated by Link's F-22 full mission trainers, enabling pilots to practice tasks including formation flight, air refueling, takeoff and landing, emergency procedures and weapons delivery during air-to-air and air-to-ground combat missions. F-22 full mission trainers will deliver a highly realistic training environment, one in which pilots are able to view out-the-window terrain and sky computer generated imagery across a Link-built SimuSphere visual system display that provides a 360º field-of-view. A head-tracking system is used to follow pilot head movement to ensure that high-resolution computer generated imagery is displayed wherever the pilot turns his head.

TF-22 weapons tactics trainers will provide pilots with extensive procedural training to enhance aircraft systems operation. Supported by a high fidelity tactical environment, the trainer will enable pilots to interact with simulated controls and displays representing the primary F-22 aircraft instrument panel. In addition to enabling pilots to practice individual and team weapon systems employment, weapons tactics trainers can be used as an instructional system or mission generation system.

Maintenance technicians will be able to inspect, remove, check and replace components in F-22 seat and canopy trainers, which are high fidelity air vehicle replicas of a portion of the F-22's forward fuselage. Hands-on maintenance training will enable technicians to focus on the aircraft's ejection seat and canopy systems.

In addition to delivery of F-22 training devices, Link also is responsible for networking the full mission trainers it is building under the two production contracts received to date. This networked configuration will enable the Air Force to conduct team training exercises, including rehearsal of combat missions within a virtual simulated environment. In addition, Link also will network weapons tactics trainers currently being built under two F-22 trainer production contracts that will support multi-ship flight training.
