LONDON, May 16, 2006 - L-3 Communications’ (NYSE: LLL) Link Simulation and Training (Link) division today announced that the U.S. Navy has conditionally accepted its F/A-18C Distributed Mission Training (DMT) system installed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore, CA. In meeting this milestone, the F/A-18C DMT system at NAS Lemoore is ready to train Hornet pilots on the most advanced distributed mission training system within the U.S. Navy flight simulation inventory.

"While this is the second such system Link has delivered to the U.S. Navy, it is the first F/A-18C DMT system to incorporate technologies that will enable it to engage in distributed training exercises with other combined, joint and coalition training devices," said Mike Wallace, Link’s vice president of Navy and Air Force Programs. "Having achieved this significant milestone at NAS Lemoore, we look forward to making upgrades to the currently fielded F/A-18C DMT system at NAS Oceana, VA so that both systems can conduct distributed, cross-country eight-ship networked training exercises."

The system connectivity between the NAS Lemoore F/A-18C DMT system with other Navy, joint and coalition training devices has been made possible due to system upgrades incorporated under the Navy Aviation Simulation Master Plan (NASMP). The NASMP upgrades to the F/A-18C DMT system include integration of a new next generation threat system and weapons server common environment, in addition to an upgraded real time interface and training system software to support improved distributed training protocols. The NASMP upgrade also includes a wide area networking capability.

Plans call for this advanced distributed training capability to be added to many Navy training systems - including the E-2C, P-3C, EA-6B and H-60 simulator platforms - to facilitate full interoperability and support a fair fight virtual environment between all training devices during networked training exercises.

The F/A-18C DMT installations at NAS Lemoore and NAS Oceana each have four F/A-18C Tactical Operational Flight Trainers (TOFTs), briefing and debriefing rooms and a mission operations center. After using real-world mission planning systems to conduct mission briefs, pilots move to the F/A-18C TOFTs to undertake their training exercise. Personnel in the mission operations center are able to oversee and control the networked training event. Once the mission comes to a close, Hornet pilots review mission event data captured during their flight to analyze team tactical performance.

The four high-fidelity F/A-18C TOFTs are integrated with Link’s personal computer image generation system, SimuView™, to provide out-the-window and cockpit sensor imagery. The out-the-window imagery is projected onto Link’s SimuSphere™ visual display system, providing a fully immersive, 360° synthetic combat environment.
