NEW YORK, NY, January 9, 2001 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) today announced that its
Link Simulation and Training division has been awarded a $2.1 million dollar contract from
the Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) to reconfigure a U.S. Navy T-45C instrument flight trainer to
a T-45C operational flight trainer.
The Navy's T-45 training devices are used to qualify new pilots for transition to the
F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, F-14 Tomcat or AV-8B Harrier jump jet. The T-45 operational flight
trainers are used by student pilots to practice airfield and carrier takeoffs and landings,
formation flight, weapons delivery and low-level flying. Pilots are able to practice a
designated mission prior to flying the aircraft.
"At Link, we're proud of the continuing contributions we're making to the T-45 training
system program," said Jim Dunn, president of Link Simulation and Training. "This contract
marks the seventh production award Link has received from Boeing since the inception of the
T-45 training system program in 1986."
In upgrading the T-45C instrument flight trainer, Link will add a functional heads-up
display, image generation system and a visual display system. This will enable the trainer
to join other T-45C operational flight trainers that have been designed to support intermediate
and advanced strike fighter simulator training.
This will be the sixth T-45C operational flight trainer Link has delivered to Boeing
and the Navy as part of the T-45 Training System program. Over the course of the program,
Link has delivered three T-45C instrument flight trainers, two T-45A instrument flight
trainers and six T-45A operational flight trainers
The previously delivered T-45C trainers are being used today to train new pilots on
the service's modern T-45 "glass cockpit" jet trainer. Currently Link is currently also
completing the final assembly and hardware and software integration process on two additional
T-45C operational flight trainers that will be ready for training at Naval Air Station
Meridian, MS in 2001.
