Link Simulation & Training is in the final phases
of concluding an upgrade on the first of two E-6B Operational
Flight Trainers (OFT) that are part of the U.S. Navy's E-6
Contract Flight Crew Training System.
The
redesigned E-6B OFT is having its existing cockpit instruments
replaced with a common display system consisting of six LCD
flat panel displays installed in a new main instrument panel.
Additional avionics upgrades include the implementation of
an Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System, Traffic Alert
Collision Avoidance System and a new flight management system.
The upgrade effort also included replacing the pilot and
copilot side panels and overhead panels, in addition to the
center aisle stand being extensively revised. The E-6B OFT
modification also made extensive use of aircraft common hardware
in the cockpit and new avionics cabinet. Major changes also
were made to trainer unique hardware and software.
This effort will result in the E-6B OFT morphing from its
analog steam gauge cockpit to a modern global air traffic
management compliant avionics system.
